Some helpful tips to having your wedding gown altered
Congratulations your getting married. You have viewed all the bridal magazines, stopped in all the bridal boutiques, and tried on a number of gowns, at last you have found “The One”. After all of your invested time you have selected the most beautiful wedding gown in the world. If you have purchased your gown from a bridal boutique, or from an online company you will need to have your wedding gown altered, and these alterations should be done by an Alteration Specialist.
There is no such thing as “a nip and tuck” when it comes to a wedding gown. Each bride has a unique body type, and bridal gowns are manufactured on a standard scale. Some body types require very little while others require a great deal of work. Ideally your bridal consultant had you purchase a gown, (in terms of size) for the largest part of your body, i.e. bust, waist, or hips. At the very least you will have to have your gown bustled. This creates a number of challenges for a person who sews. Therefore; the person altering your wedding gown should be experienced in the bridal alteration field. so that your gown is altered perfectly.
Here are some helpful tips to having your wedding gown altered for the one of the most important days of your life.
When Should I Start? It’s important to start your wedding gown alterations at the right time (like it or not) brides tend to gain or lose weight as the wedding day approaches. There are many reasons why we loss or gain weight and these issues will affect the fit of your gown. If you start your alterations too early, and are planning to diet before your wedding, then your gown will be too big and the stress of it all may cause you to gain weight causing your gown to be to tight on your wedding day. On the other hand if you start too late, you could run the risk of not being able to find a qualified person to alter your gown in time. The alterations process usually starts about six weeks before your wedding date. My brides have 2 week time span between fittings, or you whatever works best for your schedule. At your final fitting, you will choose a delivery date: the date that your dress will be completed: stuffed with tissue in a cardboard bust form, steamed, pressed, threads cut everything will be ready for the big day and your gown is perfect! This usually takes place on the way out of town or on your way to the rehearsal dinner. Please call us with any other questions and to schedule your first meeting. Which Seamstress Should I Use? Many of the bridal boutiques will offer wedding gown alterations for their customers, but; if you’ve bought your gown online or your bridal shop doesn’t offer alterations, then be sure that you select someone who specializes in bridal gown alteration. Not just any seamstress will do. Just because someone is capable of sewing a few seams, does not qualify them to alter your gown. There are many intricate and complex details within your wedding gown not to mention the delicate fabrics used to create it. You do not want the gown of your dreams being sewn by someone with a cigarette hanging from their lips (filling your gown with the odor of smoke) while sewing your gown on their kitchen table (exposing it to whatever was served for dinner). Find a professional.
What Should I Have At My Alterations Appointment? Get the most from your Alterations appointment by being prepared. Bring someone with you to help you make decisions as far as altering the dress (shortening train or changing the design), for your initial and final fittings. Find your shoes, they are not as easy to find as you may think! Bring everything you are planning to wear on your wedding day, including you bra or bustier, spanx, slip, shoes etc. If your going to have bra cups sewn in make sure your seamstress carries them or purchase your own. Have your accessories if you would like to try them on with the gown. . When you are try on everything together, it is easier to envision what you’ll look like on your wedding day. Having your wedding shoes on hand is important to get the length of your gown right so you won’t be tripping over it on your wedding day. If you don’t have your wedding shoes yet, then bring a pair that are close to the height you are looking for.
